Mokelumne Hill Gold Country California Vacations, Escapes and Business Trips

Mokelumne Hill in California Gold Country is home to the legenday Leger Hotel, the ghost hotel. The Hotel Leger is a haunted hotel,in one of the lustiest of mining towns. Unfortunately, we've never found this hotel available for booking or offering rooms so we can't recommend it. What's of interest and significance about this hotel is that it claims to be the longest continuously operating hotel in California. Founded in 1851 in as Hotel de France,it first operated out of a wood framed tent. Eventually it grew and purchased a building next door as part of its assets. In 1874 it was renamed Leger Hotel and has operated with that name ever since. Listed as a California Historical Landmark, the hotel portion that was acquired from a next door building contains a basement with the remains of the jail once used by the courthouse that the building first operated as. Who's to say that the ghosts reported are not of the former prisoners? Some claim they are of Leger, for which the hotel was named, and other assorted ghosts. While such anecdotal stories and first hand encounters are difficult to prove, the popularity of their lore or reality make Hotel Leger and other such hotels extremely popular for those seeking paranormal encounters. Other ghost hotels where you can book a room include the Carey House in Placerville.
