Marina del Rey includes one of the largest manmade harbors in the United States. Very urban in its look and feel, you'll see tower buildings overlooking the harbor. These are mostly condominium complexes and not hotels. The hotels in Marina del Rey range from waterfront affordable hotels such the Marriott at Mother's Beach, to the Five Diamond Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey, our favorite place to stay. It is located in the 10 minutes north of Los Angeles International Airport, providing an ideal location for trips to Los Angeles. With shopping, dining and waterfront appeal, one of the fun things to do when visiting is to take a Hornblower Sunday Brunch or Dinner Cruise. This is your best bet for seeing the landscape, the bays, and the scenic hills that surround Marina del Rey. From many hotels you can wander to great dining in the Marina, and select from popular chain hotel favorites such as The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Chart House, Islands, or enjoy gourmet faire at the Ritz's restaurant, Jer-Ne. They make some very nice breakfast dishes that are light, healthy and quite tasty. For those on a budget, breakfast is the best way to sample their menu.
Marina del Rey is a busy place, and one of the most popular residential areas for pilots and professionals who must fly in and out of L.A. often. With a beach path that accesses Santa Monica and Venice Beach, you'll find that Marina del Rey doesn't lack for ways to get exercise. In the bay you can rent kayaks and ply the easy waters while viewing the nautical crowd on their luxury yachts or affordable boats. Bird watching is recommended as a way to get out and experience a treasure, Ballona Wetlands.
Shopping at the several Marina del Rey centers makes for great entertainment. Waterside at Marina del Rey features clothing, jewelry and accessory stores, a market and dining while Villa Marina Marketplace, the community's largest shopping center, offers 70 stores, restaurants, and movie theaters.
For nightlife, Marina del Rey features a blend of business class, travelers, and the casual, local crowd. A nice pair of slacks is often all you'll need to complete your evening wardrobe in this seaside town. Options for going out include bars and live music in restaurants and hotels. Cafe Del Rey has a Piano Bar usually in action, and jazz trio at their Sunday Brunch, while sports fans can cozy up to Tony P?s Dockside Grill & Tavern, a sports bar with most the top games of the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL events. It was chosen as the best local sports bar for its surroundings and focus on the basics--sports, beer on tap, and more sports. While we previously recommended you try Jer-Ne for a breakfast meal, the evenings light up with DJs spinning tunes in this club atmosphere where conventioneers like to be entertained. Another hotel, Marrriott, features Glow, an outdoor lounge with chic decor and non-stop cool. Poolside cabanas can be reserved for bottle service, making this a very intimate option for your favorite date or companion. The decades-young Warehouse Restaurant enjoys live bands playing jazz and some salsa lessons on certain nights. The food at the Warehouse features catch of the day, steaks and other delicious offerings in a waterfront setting at the Marina. Finally, our top choice for an all inclusive meal (except for cocktails at the cash bar), is the Hornblower Cruise we previously discussed. Take a jacket, as it can be cool at night especially. But for anywhere from $50 - 100 per person (subject to change), you can dine, glide along the bay and have a unique experience on a day or evening cruise. Sunset cruises are ideal for popping questions, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.
