Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles County is a South Bay beach community near Los Angeles International Airport. Known for its surfing culture, Manhattan Beach is one of the original Southern California surfing meccas. At the base of the pier you may notice a statue honoring one of the local surfing greats, and at minimum, you'll see surfers riding the waves nearly every waking minute of every day. Tourists can rent surfboards and get a surfing lesson to learn how to mount the board and get up riding a wave by visiting one of the surf stores that line the base of the pier in the open plaza with the tall palm trees. In addition to many surfing competitions that are hosted at Manhattan all year long, you'll find some repeat annual events that attract large crowds such as AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) Pro Beach volleyball tournament held each summer.
