Los Angeles is California's top beach destination and most popular vacation, as wll as its largest city. It epitomizes the world's vision of the Southern California beach vacation. But LA beaches are just one part of the LA experience. The city of 3 or so million includes Hollywood and other spots that attract tourists from around the globe to visit. Star power is great, and so is the music industry's influence. Creativity, beauty, wealth and even poverty are all part of this mega-machine where people from around the globe come to make it, or at least try to make a go of it. For tourists, you'll have a tough time doing it all in L.A. because you may want to spend time exploring the coast, so the best advice is to pick your museums, your beaches, and focus on things you can accomplish. Universal Studios Hollywood, The Getty Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the L.A. Cathedral, Hollywood & Highland, West Hollywood's music and nightlife, Burbank Studios and television show tapings are a few attractions that may be on your long list of things to do. While downtown L.A. includes lots of tall buildings and corporate jobs, as you head for the tourist attractions and the beaches of Santa Monica the buildings aren't quite so tall. Tourists don't feel like they've been to L.A. if they haven't seen Hollywood, but there are some other gems we recommend you add to your list.

One favorite excursion is the trip to Catalina Island. The one hour boat ride from the San Pedro or Long Beach harbor puts you on an island some 25 miles away from the mainland. Charming, beautiful and well worth a day of your time, you can visit and come back to L.A. by evening, or book a hotel and stay overnight at Catalina's major city, Avalon.

One of the largest events Los Angeles has hosted was the Summer Olympic Games, but annually you'll find there are thousands of events and happenings. The Los Angeles Marathon is one. Free outdoor summer concerts, cultural heritage celebrations and world class concerts, theater and ballet are just every day options in the City of Angels. The more visible events include the New Year's Tournament of Roses Rose Parade in Pasadena, and the annual Academy Awards in which the Oscars are presented to actors, actresses, producers, and movie industry specialists for their accomplishments in the release of films from the previous year. The Red Carpet at Kodak Theater is the scene where fans camp out, then line up to get glimpses of their favorite stars in their diamonds and expensive designer gowns. The Oscars, or Academy Awards, are usually held in late Februry each year. With typical L.A. fanfare, the guests begin arriving hours before the show in their limos. Throughout the year you may catch a glimpse of celebrities throughout California, but especially in the L.A. areas near studios, and the beaches.

When booking hotels and staying in L.A. you can find some affordable to budget hotels around the L.A. Airport, but we recommend you pay a bit more for location, comfort, and even safety. Not all hotels and neighborhoods are the same. Our favorite spots to book a room include the beaches--Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, or the hotels such as The Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood where many of the celebs hang out before and during the Oscar ceremonies. World class hotels abound, and so does the world class dining and entertainment.

To catch the ambience, make a visit to Beverly Hills. While most the hotels there are in the $300 and up range, you can actually find some rooms in decent places for under $200. One we've enjoyed is The Crescent. The rooms are small but the vibe is totally celeb. Also check out some of the hotels in West Hollywood if you like. Staying there allows you to go out at night to many restaurants and clubs, then walk back to your place. Parking is at a premium so you'll find that walking from your hotel, then back again actually is do-able.

West Hollywood is the gay-friendly city where approx. one-third of the population professes to live alternate lifestyles. The neighborhoods of WeHo are quite charming and filled with lots of friendly people. Don't confuse the dazed tourists for locals who feel quite creative, friendly and hospitable. We find West Hollywood is a great place to visit and hang out. Several huge events include the Halloween celebration held outdoors. It is the largest such celebration in the U.S. Then there's a alternate lifestyle celebration annually with bands, concerts and lots of fun. Because West Hollywood is the home of The Roxy, Whisky a Go Go, and clubs where nearly every famous rock musician or comedian has performed, you owe it to yourself if you love music to visit and stay in West Hollywood. The hotels are popular with celebrities, and in WeHo you'll have one of your best opportunities for seeing celebrities. If you arrive on one of the typical Southern California warm and sunny days in the winter, spring, summer or fall, you'll see why so many people visit all year long, and why many have opted to quit their jobs elsewhere and stick around.

Must see attractions include the obvious tourist themed Southern California attractions such as Universal Studios Hollwyood and Disneyland. We also recommend several museums for those who can only spare time for one or two cultural attractions. Our top choice is The Getty, which is free. The next place we like for its Museum, Library and Gardens is Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino. Others in a list of of over 100 museums include:
