Long Beach is one of Southern California's true destinations, offering hotels, a convention center, public transportation to Los Angeles, an entire water taxi system for tourists to get around on the bay, and most of all, Long Beach has charm. Most of the city dates to after the early 20th century earthquake that nearly flattened the town to the ground. Rebuilding, many of the buildings dating to the post-earthquake era are considered historic and as such, subject to guidelines the city has created to maintain the character of this destination that's home to nearly half a million residents.
One aspect to Long Beach, California's beauty is its waterfront. While the Port of Long Beach connects to the Port of Los Angeles, making it one of the commerce centers for the U.S., the pleasure craft harbors that comprise the municipal marina system rank as the largest, public municipal marina in the country, serving close to 5,000 yachts and boats. Boating is absolutely every where you look. In addition to the lease and dock space for your personal craft, the bays such as Naples and Alamitos Bay carry the water craft theme with the gondola rides tourists can take, to the small Sabot sailboats that were invented in Long Beach. You can see them racing or sailing in the bay many afternoon. If you want your chance to ride a boat, hop aboard the Aqualink or Water Taxi service for a ride to the huge Queen Mary ship, Russian submarine next to it, or a boat cruise to whale watch, watch the holiday lights in the bay, or enjoy the party boats that go out each week with reggae bands and other types of music on board. There are few places on earth that take their boating so seriously, and love it so much. Don't forget that you can hop on a high speed catamaran boat and get over to Catalina Island on a Catalina Express, the service that travel a number of round trips daily to the island. And also don't forget the Carnival Cruise Line ships that head south for trips to Mexico.
Beyond the boat rides and the boat touring of the historic Queen Mary docked in the Long Beach harbor, there's an aquarium, Long Beach's Aquarium of the Pacific, designed by the same firm that created Monterey Bay Aquarium. Situated near Shoreline Village with water view dining, shops and fun, don't miss out on the Ferris Wheel ride, a new Laugh Factory Comedy Club, and a cool bowling alley, all across the street from the Convention Center. This area accesses a 5 mile-long paved beach path where joggers, bicyclists, walkers and roller bladers exercise day and night along the sand overlooking the Pacific Ocean. From the Hyatt and other hotels downtown, this beach path accesses Belmont Pier where you can fish for free.
Two historic ranchos in Long Beach are available for viewing with events throughout the seasons, and there's a train ride in El Dorado Park for children and adults. Did you know that Long Beach parks system was voted tops in the nation? Archery, trains, bikes paths, a nature center, miniature airplane port, lawn bowling, golf, and even a fly casting pond for practice, are some of the park system attractions you'll discover.
California State University Long Beach attracts many students and features an award-winning rowing team. On the university campus, you'll find an incredibly cool building, a pyramind of steel blue. Next to the pyramid is the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center building where top acts, concerts and plays are featured. But that's not the only theater in the city. There are actually several acting companies and facilities in Long Beach.
For dining, ethnic foods win our vote. Wander down Pine Avenue at night to find all sorts of cuisine and entertainment that attracts people from throughout Southern California.
Art is important to Long Beach, and you'll discover several art museums, including our favorite, the Museum of Latin American Art. An arts distric in the East Village features monthly art walks, and you'll discover that color and graphics play a large part in Long Beach's vibrant look.
Getting to Long Beach is fairly easy. The city's Long Beach Airport offers commercial flight service, and a wi-fi pick up area where you can pull up curbside and wait for your loved ones or business partners to arrive. The historic airport and the Metro Rail service from Long Beach to downtown LA offer two ways to get around. Metro Rail connects to Amtrak at Union Station, making a vacation quite easy.
