The lovely Powerhouse building offers an upscale beach amenity for your sunbathing, surfing, and beach experience with its outdoor shower, nice bathrooms, and some visit services. The small park with green lawns is ideal for picnics, or even beach-goers who prefer grass to sand. By stepping down a few feet, however, you'll be on the beach where you can sink your feet into some warm sand, or wander into the Pacific Ocean. Next to the beach are several restaurants with ocean and beach views, plus some patio dining. One of our favorites is Jake's, which is the counterpart or owned by the same company that has other beach restaurants in California and Hawaii. It's really nice to drop into Jake's for a cocktail and afternoon happy hour snack, or order a meal and mellow out with a luscious fresh fish dish, cold salad, hot bread smeared with butter, and a cool, tall ice tea drink.
The beaches of Del Mar and small and intimate, and run along the sand in front of a row of houses, restaurants, and an open space at Powerhouse Park. In addition to the beaches, events fill Del Mar's calendar with many fairs, conventions, special events and one of the longest running events of the year, the Del Mar Holidady Lights drive thru, where cars line up in queue for a fee, and get to drive through the fairgrounds for a wonderland of colorfully-lit shapes and designs ranging from palm and ocean themes, to Santa Claus and reindeer scenes. While Del Mar summers are filled with fairs and horseracing, winters at the fairgrounds are a magical scene of lights and dazzling night time displays.
