Coronado Information
Coronado is one of Southern California's great vacation destinations with lovely hotels on beaches and lots of things to see and do. Add to that the nearly perfect year-round weather and you have a recipe for spectacular vacations.
Coronado is located on an island with a bay that overlooks downtown San Diego skyline. City lights shine at night, soft sand beaches, trolley tours, a ferry to the San Diego, golf and one of the best known hotels in the world, Hotel del Coronado, are all on Coronado Island. Whether you stay at Hotel del, one of the most expensive hotel choices on the island, or select another property for your vacation, we highly recommend you visit the Hotel del Coronado and tour this historic building and its grounds. Presidents and celebrities have visited the hotel and many have stayed there in the beautiful presidential suite, an absolutely stunning choice for a wedding, honeymoon or special event. It doesn't come cheap but it is certainly a one-of-a-kind experience.
Coronado's architecture is one of its trademarks, as shown in the picture above of the once boat house for the Hotel del Coronado that sits above this building up on the hill. The popular restaurant we've dined at for years (has been a Chart House), is close to and within walking distance of the Coronado playhouse theater which features popular musicals and plays such as "Hello Dolly". As you drive into the island by car or bus, the main street of town, Orange, looks like something out of another era. Green lawns line the thoroughfare with park space for people to enjoy concerts, play or just wandering.
But then there's the beach. Fine sand beaches offer an experience that allows you to build sandcastles, sunbathe, swim, or play volleyball, to name a few entertaining beach options. Overlooking Point Loma, in the distance you can faintly see the people standing from the hillsides (if you have binoculars, maybe you could see them,) looking down your direction. San Diego is a city of views and its really a treat to take drives to the various spots such as Coronado and Point Loma to gain perspective on the city's intersting vistas, beaches and bays. The beaches of Coronado are family oriented as theis vacation playground is one of the favorite spots for families to visit and stay. Nevertheless, Coronado does offer entertainment and events for all ages, including dining out and cocktail lounges for the adults only crowd. Some elegant dining can be had at view restaurants, and one of our favorites is at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort where floor to ceiling windows offer San Diego skyline views. This four diamond hotel happens to be our favorite hotel on the island, as well.
Your best bet for night life in Coronado is catching a play, roasting hotdogs at the beach, or seeing a jazz trio in a local bar. For hot times on cool nights, head over by ferry, bus, taxi or car to downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter for sizzling music and dancing.
Coronado vacations are the perfect beginning or end to visits south of the border, or special events such as the Imperial Beach U.S. Open Sandcastle Festival held annully in July.
