Angels Camp Gold Country California Vacations, Escapes and Business Trips
Angels Camp is best known for its gold mines during the California gold rush. Located in the scenic Sierra mountains foothills, Angels Camp features budget hotels for vacation travelers. While some wish the growth would ease and slow, you'll find that progress moves on and the Angels Camp region now includes modern conveniences such as Starbucks. While the downtown shopping district is a quaint, historic street filled with one-of-a-kind restaurants and stores, you don't have to sacrifice modern conveniences.
Best known for an annual event that is held in conjunction with the County Fair, the Jumping Frog Jubilee attracts thousands of people to this small city, to watch or compete with their frogs. Based on a story by Mark Twain and his visit to the town, you'll find bronze plaques in the sidewalk downtown commemorating each year's winner. There's also a statue you can photograph, and frog souvenirs such as pins, pens, tee-shirts, hats and even postcards and books to provide a glimpse into this fun event. Other events include annual concert nights during the summer, a car show, and other celebrations the public and tourists can attend.
Some of the popular outdoor attractions involve nature in a grand way. one of the coolest things to see is the Moaning Caverns, a limestone cave complex you can visit and explore , or take one of the rappelling tours. Moaning Caverns is large enough to hold the Statue of Liberty, and is named for the sounds that seem to emanate from the structures.
One of our favorite nearby attractions is Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Talk about big trees! The redwoods in this park were once the source of disbelief back East as word spread from the West that there were trees so big, you could drive vehicles through them. While they are not the biggest, the Louis Agassiz tree in the South Grove stands 250 feet tall, and is approx. 25 feet in diameter. The largest tree in the North Grove is Empire State Tree, which is 18 feet in diameter six feet above the ground. Note: You'll find the biggest tree in the world approx. 5 hours south in the Sequoia National Park.
