With over 10,000 buildings constructed before 1930, Alameda's best attraction is its surroundings--its architecture. Even its street lights are listed in an inventory which includes 16-fluted pendant and double pendant lights, and octo-fluted lights. The variety of architectural styles is large and includes the California Bungalow, California Ranch House, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, False Front, French Provincial Revival, High-Peaked Gable, Italianate, Moderne, Pioneer & Prarie, Queen Anne, Spanish Colonial Revival, Stick, Transitional and Tudor Revival. In additional to the variety of house and building structures of significant interest, the city also publishes a list of monuments to see. Such monuments can include even a tree of historical significance. Here is the list of items of interest during your visit to Alameda.

Park Street Historical District - This area features over 70 beautifully restored homes and buildings worth a driving tour. For a bay area delight, Alameda is one of the finest places to go and explore the history through the eyes of the buildings that stand the test of time. In addition to the Park Street area, other buildings include:
1630 Ninth Street
Alameda City Hall, Alameda Free Library, Alameda High School, Alameda Theater, American Red Cross, Bureau of Electricity Central Substation, Croll Building, Dr. Edith Meyers Center, First Church of Christ Scientist, First Congregational Church of Alameda, Lincoln Park, Masonic Temple, Old Post Office Building, Sanctuary Building of the First Presbyterian Church, Second Empire Residence, St. Joseph's Basilica, The Adelphian Club, The Webster House, Union Iron Works Power House, and Veterans Memorial Building.

Alameda is located in San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay next to Oakland and the Oakland Airport. Situated on a small island, it features a charming look and feel with Victorian homes and tree-lined streets not far from a variety of great hotels. For nightlife, check out the Alameda Civic Light Opera (aclo.com) or Altarena Playhouse (altarena.org). One museum or web site we are always receiving information about is the USS Hornet Foundation Museum. This organization and its historic military ship keep an active calendar of events, drawing tourists from all over. In addition, Alameda has an historic museum and many parks and recreation opportunities for all ages.

One of Alameda's great assets is its ferry system connecting tourists with Oakland and San Francisco. Daily ferry service operates from Alameda, connecting with Pier 41 or the San Francisco Ferry Building in the heart of the action. USS Hornet located at Pier 3 at Alameda Point, makes for a unique and interesting tour. Open daily, this legend of Naval history features many special events as well as ongoing exhibits on board the ship.
