Huntington Beach Travel

Huntington Beach Pier

Huntington Beach was once known for its wild times, but has mellowed as it has grown. The people living in a city that's becoming more upscale have reduced many of the extreme thrill opportunities for kids. The skate park is almost gone, the dirt hills that brought youth from miles are nearly gone, and place are beaches, dining and even a wine bar or two, pure and simple. Still popular as a family vacation spot, there are no real attractions, per se, in Huntington Beach, except for its beaches and downtown surf shops. But the good news is that your're approx. 35 minutes from Disneyland, an hour from Universal Studios, five minutes from Newport Beach with its boat to Catalina Island and a 25 minute drive to Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific--perfect for kids.

The most popular attaction, as we described, is the beach. It's big, it's sandy and it's flat and easy to navigate. Add to that the parking lots that allow you to park and walk right over to the sand, and you have an accessible experience requiring very little effort.

In the trend of going upscale, there are several resorts online to be built...about three more. Two already exist, and while none are on the sand (you have to go to Newport, Sunset Beach, Laguna Beach, L.A. and San Diego where they got the hotels built before a coastal commission came along and denied building hotels or houses on beaches), one hotel, Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa has a bridge on the hotel property that crosses above Pacific Coast Highway, so you're practically on the beach with a safe walk across.

Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort is owned by the same company that later built the Hyatt. Both are four diamond, so you pay a bit more for the quality rooms, restaurants on site, vallet parking, catering facilities, swimming pools, etc. These two expensive hotels are by no means the only hotels to choose. Other Huntington Beach hotels include affordable Best Western hotels, Howard Johnson, Comfort Suites and an Extended Stay hotel.

While we stated Huntington Beach doesn't have any attraction such as a theme park or boat rides to an island, they do a pretty good job of filling the summer calendar with events. That's the good news. The bad news is that when the most popular events are held such as US Open of Surfing, 4th of July Parade, Paintball and Volleyball, the rooms tend to go up in price along with demand. So if you're looking for an event, you may want to see our Huntington Beach Events calendar and pick out some ongoing fun. Even a day at the beach, night at a club listening to live music and dinner out on the town will get you away from the hum drum and make you feel pretty fine. For outdoor lifestyles and active people, Huntington Beach makes up for the theme park thrills with REAL sand, REAL exercise and REALITY.
