The
allure of Hotel del Coronado
includes an historic feeling, look
and even memories for many who've
watched movies such as Some Like It
Hot. But for vacations, it's the
beach that pleases everyone so much.
Hotel Del Coronado
1500 Orange Ave.
Coronado, CA 92118
Hotel del Coronado is a hotel to
remember. A visual delight, it has
graced the Southern California - San
Diego shoreline on the island of
Coronado for well over 100 years
now. This National Historic Landmark
has welcomed and hosted 10
presidents of the United States,
England's Prince of Whales (King
Edward VIII), and is best known as
the film location for Some Like it
Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis
and Jack Lemmon.
In addition to famous dignitaries,
the hotel has seen a steady stream
of celebrities throughout its
existence beginning with silent film
stars such as Charlie Chaplin and
recently Brad Pitt, Madonna and an
endless list of wealthy guests who
find the executive suites with the
pool table, beautiful bar, classic
appointments and endless views to
their liking.
The suites are not just for celebs,
however. Guests who are willing to
save up and pay the price can rent
the huge executive quarters. We
attended a wedding held on the
grounds of the Hotel del Coronado in
which the bride and groom rented the
upper floor main building suites,
the finest quarters on the property.
It was incredibly memorable and fun.
The bride looked so elegant in her
long wedding gown as it softly
brushed against the beautifully
preserved wooden floors of this
elegant suite. Before anyone entered
the room, the groom swept his
beautiful bride into his arms and
carried her through the hallway and
into the suite. It was a special
moment not forgotten.
If ambience is what you seek, a
visit to this historical treasure is
worth the money. It's not just a
romantic destination. It's also a
family vacation you won't forget.
The beach on site allows guests to
grab a breakfast at the hotel and
head out the back door to the beach.
While the place is large, it manages
to provide an experience you may
remember from childhood in which you
stayed in the comfort of a lodgings
near a beach or lake and felt so
special, wishing you could make this
place your home. The beach overlooks
Point Loma with its historic
lighthouse. Public buses run
regularly in front of the hotel to
the Ferry Landing where you can
treat yourself to a ferry ride or
alternately cross the bridge to
downtown San Diego by bus. A special
trolley service called Old Town
Trolley allows you to buy a ticket
and hop aboard for a ride that stops
and picks you back up at major
attractions such as San Diego Zoo,
Old Town, Balboa Park and Horton
Plaza.
If you don't need the ambience of
this historical hotel, there are
several additional options on
Coronado Island for a weekend
getaway or vacation stay.
We've tried several: Loews Coronado
Bay Resort is wonderful for couples.
You can take a romantic gondola ride
from the dock outside the hotel.
Marriott welcomes you with a huge
entry fountain filled with real,
live pink flamingos! It's an ideal
family hotel. There are many more
affordable choices, too!
