Half the rooms at the
Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, 1755
Highland Avenue, overlook the sign on the hill that says, Hollywood. Also
within view is a budget-priced
Holiday Inn Hollywood-Walk Of Fame, Ca,
2005 N Highland Ave.,
plus another magic hotel property, Magic Castle where some of the world's
finest magicians perform. It's said that unless you are member of this club,
you can only see their acts by staying at the hotel.
About the
Hollywood sign. Each of the nine letters that spell out the word,
"HOLLYWOOD" stand 45 feet high. Once spelling out HOLLYWOODLAND, the "LAND"
portion was removed in 1949 and the new adaptation became an almost instant
success, some claim. Maintenance of the sign is under the Hollywood Sign
Trust, a nonprofit that acts as guardian for the icon.
Sitting atop
Mt. Lee in the Hollywood Hills, the Hollywood sign stands four stories high
and stretches 450 feet in width. One of the most photographed signs in the
world, it has appeared in countless movies, tourist photos, record album
covers, you name it!
Painted with a premier coating of white,
it takes about 300 gallons of a specialty paint to perfectly
cover the letters.
Places to view and photograph the sign
include our hotel room at Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, down
below in the outdoor mall commons area of Hollywood & Highland
near Starbucks Coffee, at Beechwood Canyon Drive & Glen Holly,
at the corner of Franklin Ave. and Gower or at Lake Hollywood.
Lake Hollywood can be found
from the 101 Freeway Barham Blvd. exit. Take Barham east to Lake
Hollywood Drive. Turn right on Lake Hollywood Drive and follow
to top of hill. At the top of the hill, Lake Hollywood Drive
bears sharply to the right. At the bottom of the hill, bear
sharply to the left onto Montlake Drive. Follow Montlake to
Tahoe. Turn left on Tahoe to Canyon Lake, turn right, then
proceed up the hill. You'll notice a park on your left. |
