William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach
is a beautiful beach within view of the Hearst Castle tourist attraction.
The beach is ideal for fishing, swimming, surfing, kayaking and bird
watching.
Surfers can be seen lugging their
surfboards to and from their cars to the beach next to the San Simeon pier.
For those seeking a day of fun, there
are picnic tables and charcoal grills (bring your own charcoal) for
barbecues. A parking lot is set on beach level and an additional lot is
located at the bluff for those who prefer a close location to their picnic
enjoyment. William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach offers pier fishing
(fishing licenses are not required when fishing from the pier but limits are
enforced) and deep-sea fishing from chartered boats, ocean kayaking, picnic
tables, barbecue grills and restrooms.
This day use area offers 24 picnic
sites, 150 parking spaces, restrooms, water faucets, barbecue grill stands
and easy beach access. Recreational activities include picnicking, swimming,
fishing, boating, kayaking and sunbathing. There is a kayak and boogie board
concession in operation with equipment for rent.
The beach is located directly across Highway One from the Hearst Castle.
Hearst Castle is located on California Highway 1, about halfway between San
Francisco and Los Angeles. Driving time from either city is four to six
hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
San Simeon's summer temperatures range from the high 50s to low 90s, while
winter ranges between the low 40s and high 60s. During the winter months fog
is common along the coast, but normally burns off by late morning. However,
a sweatshirt or sweater and light windbreaker can greatly increase the
comfort level on foggy mornings and cool evenings.
