This affordable (usually well under $50) is one of the finest, most formidable golf courses in the country for both beginner’s and seasoned professional players. Located in the lush, rolling hills of California's Central Coast in Lompoc (home to Vandenberg Air Base), La Purisima Golf Course recently received 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest Best Places to Play.

For those seeking an L.A. escape, Orange County family vacation or couples wine tour, this destination is one that we've cherished for many years as an authentic Central Coast experience. We've enjoyed Lompoc initially for its small town atmosphere, flower fields, Ocean Park and beach, and have watched it grow from a military-based economy into a destination and highly-desirable residential  community.

 

Today Lompoc flowers are disappearing from the fields but the flowers continue to be commemorated in an annual Flower Festival in June. What's available all year long is golf, wine country wine tasting, Solvang Danish Village and next to the La Purisima Golf Course is Mission La Purisima, one of 21 original Spanish missions. The golf course is two or three miles from our favorite hotel in Lompoc, Embassy Suites.  We've stayed at other more affordable hotel properties, too, and have found them satisfactory for our family outings. Another great hotel nearby is the Marriott in Buellton. For a more upscale golf vacation, be sure to check out Alisal Ranch in Solvang. The rooms are much, much more expensive but there's a gourmet chef at this actual ranch where you can golf next door, ride horses or wander the ranch grounds outside the Danish town of Solvang.

 

Golfers will enjoy the Central Coast's laid back attitude and easy pace. A round of golf is great most any place but this course and destination will foot the bill for a perfect vacation.
