We
call it the Frisbee Golf Course (that's so
passé), but at one time when people only
threw Wham-0's, that's pretty much what they
called this place. Today, the Huntington Beach Disc Golf
Course takes on some serious players who
bring the disc bags filled with drivers,
putters and the like, in colorful selections
of half a dozen innova style discs.
These fancy frisbees are traded, bought and
sold for improved scoring required to
compete and win the weekly tournaments held
(each Wednesday) at the popular course.
In
existence since the 70's (1977, to be
precise), and recognized as one of the
earliest 18 hole disc courses, the course is
not the shining example it once was as
other, newer courses have been built. But
it's every bit as enjoyed by the thousands
of players (majority are guys), who come to
Central Park in Huntington Beach to share an
hour or two of competition and fun.
As the
second disc course in the nation (first was
in Pasadena in
1976), the course has held up through a
number of changes and modifications. It's
assets are its shaded lawns, and hill that
goes down by a lake. Compared to an 18-hole
golf course such as Meadowlark in Huntington
Beach, its on a similar par as far as its
competition goes. Some challenges, scenic
setting, affordable pricing and easy access
in the urban environment all make for a
perfect hobby, new sport to try or serious
competition. There's a portable restroom,
snack shop and trade-ins and sales for
discs.
