Artist Emilia García Focuses on
Culture & Family at Ventura Museum ArtWalk
Emilia García, whose art reflects upon
the beauty of her Latino culture, women, and
the importance of family, is the Museum of
Ventura County’s selected artist during
Ventura’s Harvest ArtWalk. Meet the artist
and see her work on Saturday, October 24,
from 1:00-7:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 25,
from 12:00- 5:00 p.m.
Raised on her grandparents’ ranch in Piru,
García was propelled to leave the corporate
world and immerse herself in her art when
her beloved grandmother died in 1996. She
often reflects Latina culture in the clothes
and jewelry she wears, and describes her
paintings, pastels, and prints as work
“centered on the beauty of my culture, who
we are and where we come from.” García’s
grandmother remains her inspiration. “It is
through the closing of her eyes that she has
opened my eyes to the reality of what I have
become,” she explains.
García’s work has been exhibited in the
invitational 2005 Biennale of Contemporary
Art in Florence, Italy. She is also featured
in the museum’s current fall exhibition
Wearing Our Stories: Costume & Cultural
Identity in the Latino Community.
