'Bustin
Down the Door' launch coincides with the US Open
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 July, 2008 : - - Huntington Beach -- Against the backdrop of
Surf City USA and the world’s largest professional
surfing competition, BUSTIN’ DOWN THE DOOR launches
its national platform release with a “premiere”
screening on Wed., July 23 at Bella Terra in
Huntington Beach coinciding with the Honda U.S. Open
of Surfing.
Cast members
set to make special appearances include Shaun Tomson,
Mark Richards, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Peter
“PT” Townend and Ian Cairns. Bustin Down the Door
chronicles a tumultuous two-year period of
competitive and cultural clashes in the
mid-Seventies in surfing's Mecca - Hawaii's North
Shore of Oahu - as a small crew of Australians and
South Africans set out with attitude and
determination to change the world of surfing.
Framed around the emerging careers of World
Champions-to-be Bartholomew, Tomson and Richards,
Bustin’ documents how these young men risked
everything to become the best surfers in the world,
and how their courage and vision began a cultural
revolution that led to the birth of professional
surfing and ultimately what has become today's
billion-dollar surf industry.
The
award-winning documentary, narrated by Academy Award
nominee Edward Norton, is a dramatic story of a
pivotal time in surfing. During the winter of 1975
in Hawaii, surfing was shaken to its core.
A group of
young surfers from Australia and South Africa
sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to
create a sport, a culture and an industry that is
today worth billions of dollars and has captured the
imagination of the world. With a radical new
approach and a brash colonial attitude, these
surfers crashed headlong into culture that was not
ready for revolution.
The film was
directed by Jeremy Gosch, and was produced by Monika
Gosch, Robert Traill and Shaun Tomson; this is
Gosch’s first documentary film. Bustin’ was filmed
on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii and features
iconic surf footage from 1970’s films including Free
Ride and Many Classic Moments and a period
soundtrack that includes Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and
Leonard Cohen.
Among the many
notable surfers and pros interviewed were Cairns,
Townend, Michael Tomson, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater,
Rob Machado, Barry Kanaiaupuni and “Fast Eddie”
Rothman. The film is distributed by Screen Media
Films.
