39 Marks 20th Anniversary of Arrival of Sea Lions on Jan.
15, 2010. In January 1990 California sea lions began
“hauling out” on Pier 39’s K-dock shortly after the 1989
Loma Prieta earthquake. At the time it was only a few dozen;
however, a plentiful herring supply, dock space and a
protective environment attracted increased numbers over the
years.
Sea lions, AKA pinnipeds, annually migrate to the
Channel Islands during the summer months to breed, but
when January arrives, some come back to Pier 39, delighting
visitors with cameras in hand. Lots of their favorite foods
such as herring are in abundant supply in the San Francisco
Bay during this time, providing food, and a protected home
on the K-Dock, which is a “Watchable Wildlife” viewing area
by the California Watchable Wildlife Project. The sea lions
first showed up at these docks after the 1989 San Francisco
earthquake. The sea lions have been a mixed blessing say
some local fishermen who in recent times have found their
boats and docks invaded.
But they entertain tourists, offer educational
opportunities, and provide a winter draw for commercial
enterprises ranging from restaurants to shopping and
tourism, so they continue to be celebrated even though they
are noisy, messy and aggressive in protecting their turf.
Marine Mammal Center, a tourist attraction at Pier 39,
offers information for the curious, and includes programs
for students to explore the Pacific Ocean and local San
Francisco environment on the edge of the Monterey Bay, the
largest protected offshore marine sanctuary in the United
State.
