Oakland actually has a German heritage dating back to the
early 20th century. While not everyone is
aware of this little known fact, the roots grow stronger as an Oktoberfest
event was established in 2008 in the Dimond district to celebrate German
culture.
Oakland’s first annual
Oktoberfest in Dimond was planned for 2008. It was created to celebrate the
rich German heritage that's nearly been forgotten as the city has grown and
changed. But Oakland has embraced its rich cultural diversity like no other
California city, and today, it has bounced back with a renaissance of
activities and events that offer everything from soul, blues, jazz and rock
to polka music, even. So get out your favorite lederhosen, your
personalized 10-gallon beer stein and get ready for a good time in what
could become an annual German fest like no other-- Oktoberfest in the Dimond,
to be precise.
Saturday October 10, 2009 from 11-6pm

Although Oakland’s Dimond District is a diverse and progressive
neighborhood, it is steeped in German history. Around 1900, the area was
largely a German community where social and community life centered on the
beer gardens in the area. Though the beer gardens are gone, the community
spirit they fostered still remains.
Oktoberfest will feature traditional German beer gardens, German food and
dance, gourmet food booths, historical tours, performances by local artists
on two stages, artisans, a kids’ carnival area, a green living and wellness
expo, and much more. Attendees will quaff, sip, drink, tipple, imbibe,
dance, sing, and eat, as well as learn about the historical connection
between Oakland and its earlier German residents.
