The Chevron Golf Challenge is a golf tournament taking place at Sherwood Country Club, a championship course designed by the worldwide famous professional golf player Jack Nicklaus. The tournament is an offseason PGA Tour-recognized challenge, hosted by The Tiger Woods Foundation, offering since 2009 official World Golf Ranking Points.
The Sherwood Country Club, conveniently located in Thousand Oaks, California, is a unique facility, having its main golf course considered as one of the best golf courses of the world, with 18 holes accompanied by oak trees, jasmine and rose bushes and lush landscapes.
The tournament takes place in the first week of December, over five days, and it's open to sixteen players: the defending champion, the top eleven available from Official World Golf Rankings, the four major winners and two special exemption players selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation.
The event is organized as a fundraising for the Tiger Woods Foundation, established in 1996 by the famous golf champion and his father Earl Woods, with the purpose of creating community-based programs to improve health, education and welfare of American children, organizing fundraising events such as concerts and golf tournaments, and the building of community centers.
The Challenge had three editions so far, twelve if we count former denominations as Williams World Challenge and Target World Challenge. Tiger Woods has already won four times in the past, with the other tourneys won by Graeme McDowell, Davis Love III, Vijah Singh, Luke Donald, and Tom Lehman.
The Chevron World Challenge provides a purse of 5 million dollars, an extremely lucrative one, considering that unlike other PGA tournaments just sixteen players are allowed to participate. The restricted pool of players makes this Challenge extremely interesting for golfers, having sixteen of the best players in the world challenging each other over five days. An incomparable golf course, located in one of the best country clubs of the world, with a great variety of facilities is the field of this amazing competition, which is quickly becoming a classic for golfers all around the world.
