Sea Life Aquarium Beach
Trash Exhibit at Legoland California
CARLSBAD, Calif. –
LEGOLAND California
Carlsbad, Calif.--California's beaches
are filled with tons of trash, and a tiny
portion of the refuge that is normally
collected and thrown into dumpsters or
washed back out to sea once again, was
collected off the beaches of Carlsbad to
create a new exhibit, “Beach Trash, A Whale
of a Problem,” at Sea Life Aquarium at
Legoland California. Kids can make a
difference – one piece of trash at a time as
proven by the 6th grade classes from
Jefferson Elementary in Carlsbad. They began
collecting trash from the beaches in October
and worked with environmental artist Teresa
Espaniola to turn it into a life-sized gray
whale mosaic – all while learning about the
ocean and the role they can play in saving
our seas.
A 26-foot-long mosaic the students fondly
call “Little Gray,” is on display at SEA
LIFE Aquarium until the middle of April 2010
when it migrates to a new home. Beautiful
and alarming – it is made of sun glasses,
bottle tops, a watch, a cell phone, toys,
shovels, sandals, and even a pair of
dentures.
SEA LIFE Aquarium also debuted a
documentary about the creation of the Trash
Whale. The 5-minute film follows the
students as they learn about the effect
trash can have on our beaches. The
documentary will play several times daily in
the Aquarium’s theater and can be viewed at
sealifeus.com/whats_new.
