Julia Morgan at Pleasanton’s Museum On Main
Re-enactment of woman who
designed Hearst Castle
Betty Marvin is historian and
preservation planner with the Oakland City Planning Department's
Cultural Heritage Survey project, a highly regarded citywide
inventory of historic buildings and neighborhoods. As a
professional historian with degrees from Stanford and UC
Berkeley, Marvin bases her Julia Morgan impersonation on
extensive and ongoing primary research. When she visits, Miss
Morgan will reminisce about her struggle to become an architect,
her colorful clients and associates including the Hearsts and
Bernard Maybeck, and her lifelong involvement with women's
philanthropic organizations.

Actress, Betty Marvin, will
play Julia Morgan, Hearst Castle architect, and give a
presentation at 7 p.m., Thursday, February 19, at Lynnwood
Methodist Church, 4444 Black Avenue,
Pleasanton . The lecture, part of the Ed Kinney Lecture Series,
is sponsored by Pleasanton ’s Museum On Main. Reservations are
requested. Admission is $5 for museum

Maritime Research Center Event Features A Night of Nautical
Knots with Capt. Lindsay Philpott, “The Knot Guy”. Capt. Lindsay Philpott will have The Maritime
Research Center, 301 W. Seventh St., San Pedro, all tied up when he presents a program on nautical knot tying
beginning at 7 p.m.
The program is part of the Maritime Research Center’s regular
Third Thursday series that presents topics of interest in the
nautical world. Capt. Philpott will cover the basic types of
knots used in the maritime field and their historical
application.

The Maritime Research Center originates research in the nautical
field and serves as a medium for sharing studies of the field.
Its focus is on the history of maritime seafaring, but
encompasses current issues that are informed by a thorough,
thoughtful, and critical understanding of history. It operates
the Nautical Shop at 301 West Seventh Street in San Pedro, where
a variety of maritime and ocean liner artifacts, books, and art
are available for purchase. It is also home to World Famous
Piccadilly Corner, a British-themed shop with china, books, and
Royalty collectibles.
The lecture program is free of charge and is part of the Maritime
Research Center’s Monthly Series of Third Thursday Nautical
Topics. The Center requests a reservation to ensure space.
