Elk, California is located on the northern
California Coast in Mendocino County. Situated along Highway SR 1 near
the junction of Hwy.SR 128, it is a scenic coastal community with
several lovely bed and breakfast hotel properties. As you drive
along this stretch of road and pass locations such as Mendocino, Albion,
Little River and Fort Bragg, you may encounter fog. What you also will
have a good chance of seeing are the animals the town is named for, Elk.
They live comfortably in the open expanses and sparsely populated
regions of the northern California coast where berries and bushes grow
wild and are in abundance as a food supply.
Though the region appears to be somewhat
isolated, don't be fooled. The little inns and B&B's can be sold out.
The quaint and sometimes simple accommodations often include meals
prepared by gourmet chefs working in the region's hotels. Though the
region seems somewhat remote, food preparation along the wine belt of
Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino is gourmet and the wine lists tend to be
extensive with wonderful local wines featured.
