El Matador Beach in Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach near Malibu, CA is one of the least crowded beaches in the Los Angeles area. It is located at 32100 Pacific Coast Highway away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Malibu beaches. If you are looking for celebrities to watch, then this is not the place for you. For this is where Los Angelenos go to unwind.
If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful trip to the beach, El Matador Beach is for you. It's picturesque and secluded views of the ocean are the perfect backdrop for pictures. For a romantic spot when you and your significant other want to share some intimate moments together, this beach is perfect. Watching the sun rise over the mountains will take your breath away. The gorgeous rock formations and caves make it seem like you are in another place entirely.
The small dirt parking lot across the street is rarely full during the week. Come early on the weekends however, because it can fill up quickly. If you don't mind a bit of a hike, you can park for free up the road, otherwise its $8?. Be sure to bring exact change, as you put the money in a yellow box and parking attendants check it every hour. If you wait, you'll run the chances of getting a $64 ticket. Wear comfortable shoes and pack light as there are quite a few stairs to get from the lot to the beach.
The youngsters will have a blast making sandcastles and swimming in the easily accessible sea caves. Sun worshippers, pay particular attention to the El Matador Beach and because of the isolated nature of the beach, some visitors will freely tan in the nude. Of course, this is frowned upon by lifeguards, but can be pulled off easier here than most other L.A. area beaches.
Since the drive towards El Matador is down a two lane road, it can take a while to arrive. You will not be disappointed and will be back again and again. This beach is definitely Malibu's best kept secret.
