Dutch Flat
COUNTY: Placer
Dutch Flat was named for
1800s Dutch storekeepers Joseph and Charles Dornbach. It is located near
mountain recreation areas where tourists and locals enjoy snow and water
skiing, fishing, biking, kayaking, gold panning and hiking..
Dutch Flat in Placer county,
California, is located mid-way between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, close
to Interstate Highway 80. Famous for its hydraulic mines, Dutch Flat
remains one of the towns that best showcases the era in which gold was
discovered.
Dutch Flat was settled in 1851 by a group of German miners
and had its first post office five years later. Thousands of miners worked
in hydraulic mining in this region that gained prominence not only for
gold but also for transportation as a stage station. Dutch Flat became one of the largest,
most important towns in the county during the mid-1860's. In the
fall of 1866, after the railroad had reached Cisco, 20 miles farther up
the ridge, Dutch Flat lost much of it's importance as a stage stop.
Dutch Flat looks like a New England village set amongst tall pines of
the Sierra Nevada and is sometimes thought of as the Athens of the foothills.
An Opera House where Mark Twain lectured, a thriving amateur dramatic
society and debating society once graced this gem of the Sierra Nevadas
that today remains tucked away in time for guests to visit and enjoy.
