If you are planning to visit a beach in the San Francisco Bay area, there are few finer choices than Dunes Beach near Half Moon Bay, CA in San Mateo County, California. Part of the larger Half Moon Bay State Beach system, the ocean-facing beach offers fine sand and excellent beach combing opportunities as well as a temperate climate all year round. As one of the primary beaches in the San Francisco area, there are activities and visitors throughout the year.

Dunes Beach is separated from the cities by the San Francisco State Game and Wildlife Refuge which not only allows for a peaceful beach experience, but keeps the crowds to a manageable amount with overcrowding not usually an issue.

There are several accommodations available to visitors to Dunes Beach. Both the Days Inn Half Moon Bay and Comfort Inn Half Moon Bay are just steps from the beach and offer a good location from which to explore the area. For fresh seafood from the area, it's hard to beat local favorite Sam's Chowder House. A stop at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company provides a great view and a selection of beer crafted on-site.

Being a beach on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, the weather can change at a moment's notice. Even on the hottest days of the summer, there is often a cool breeze coming in off the ocean. Typical weather in the summer involves fog in the mornings, often clearing by midday. Visitors should be sure to bring a sweater just in case the weather turns cold. In the spring and fall, the weather is usually crisp and clear. Though the sun is shining, the weather is still cool and breezy. Winters are often wet and rainy. The temperature fluctuates throughout the year, from the mid-60s in the summer to low 40s in the winter.

Dunes Beach offers many activities for people who enjoy the outdoors. The Coastside Trail runs through Dunes Beach and connects it with the other Half Moon Bay Beaches: Francis Beach and Venice Beach. A popular family attraction, the Coastside Trail provides a relatively easy hike along the coastline. Many animals can be viewed along the trail including brush rabbits, jack rabbits, and a variety of colorful birds. Only five miles long from top to bottom, the trail can be completed as a day hike. Bikers can also utilize the Coastside Trail or go off the beaten path. Dunes Beach also maintains horse trails for those wishing to choose alternative modes of travel. Dunes Beach is also popular among surfers. The high swells and tides provide an excellent chance to catch sizeable waves. The annual Mavericks Surf Competition is held nearby for that very reason.

Travelers to Dunes Beach should take some precautions. The ocean water at the beach is very cold regardless of the time of year. The risk of hypothermia is always present, so be mindful when going in the water. In addition, the cold water can cause cramps in the arms and legs with prolonged exposure. Fireworks and dogs are not allowed on the beach, however dogs are allowed in the picnic areas and on the trails provided they are on a leash at all times. Camping is not allowed on the beach, but there is a nearby campsite with 52 individual sites.

On the upside, Dunes Beach is located very close to the Greater San Francisco Bay area and getting there provides a short scenic drive up the coast. From California Highway 101, turn west on Young Avenue, just north of Half Moon Bay. From there continue west to the end of Young Avenue and you will reach the parking area for Dunes Beach.
