Behind the welcoming gates of the vast,
1700-acre estate known as Carmel Valley Ranch lies a world of extraordinary
natural beauty. Verdant fairways, majestic oaks and brilliant flowers are
set against the rugged hills of the Monterey Peninsula, just minutes east of
Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Golf is a principal attraction at
Carmel Valley Ranch, with Pete Dye having recently finished an artful redesign
of his original course to increase playability. Railroad tie and telephone
bulkheading is deemed an integral part of this course ranked by Golf Magazine as
one of Monterey's "must plays".

stunning panoramas shared only with fox, deer and wild turkey that make the
course their home.

full-service pro shop plus a clubhouse with breakfast and lunch at the Club

Player Comments: Played from the back
tees on 6/14/99 as part of a special "stay-and-play" unlimited golf
package. Resort staff treated us like royalty. I've read previous reviews
on this course, which were mixed. I don't know why anyone would except for it's
price (the special package is a pretty good deal though). Not long (a little
over knock this course, 6200 yds from the tips), but not a pushover by any
means. Very scenic. Saw deer on the 10th hole, and fowl on the 18th. Front
9 is easier (especially the first 3). Back 9 has HUGE elevation drops off the
tee (which will unfortunately make your slice/hook worse).
You don't have to be a golfer to appreciate
this special resort. Horseback riding, tennis, exercise facilities, swimming,
child care and a day spa are a few of the activities and offerings to help your
relax. Gourmet chefs serving healthy choice meals, salads fresh from the fields
and traditional faire and fish allow you to enjoy the finest dining without
having to drive off property.
So close to nature, you can be entertained
with a glass of wine as you watch the deer feed on grass, and the rays of sun
slip past tree branches on your veranda. As the golden sun turns to gray and the
evening chill calls you inside to get warm, you can watch golfers scramble to
hit their last shots of the day. The rustling of turkey and deer also
diminishes as they head home to the hills for the night.
While golfers consider the course to be the principal
attraction at Carmel Valley Ranch, the Resort attracts couples who seek
privacy and amenities such as balcony decks, two room suites and corner
room locations with an outdoor deck jacuzzi. Stop by the Chateau
Julien winery on your way into the Resort and pick out a couple bottles
of their current or reserve stock. How much more romantic can it
be to have a fireplace roaring, jacuzzi bubbling, drinking fine wine and
watching the deer and wild turkey roam in the grassy knolls below your
private suite? Awesome!
In room massages, horseback riding, tennis courts and
even a child's play center are a few of the on site offerings. There's
a famous wood sculptor, Paul Wilson, just off the premises who sells unique
items, and a 5 minute drive will take you to the Carmel Valley Barnyard
Shopping Plaza. Add another 10 minutes and you'll be at the mission
or in the heart of action in busy downtown Carmel shopping district.
