Located in the eastern part of the state between Yosemite National Park and the Nevada state border, it is home to many scenic lakes, mountains, and wilderness areas. The lakes vary from the large high desert Mono Lake to the small alpine lakes of the Hoover Wilderness. In its alpine terrain, there is camping, hiking, fishing and boating. Located in the county are two national protected areas, Inyo National Forest and Toiyabe National Forest that contain high elevation rugged peaks that have views into Yosemite and even a "fourteener" in White Mountain Peak at 14,246 feet in the White Mountains. Also in Mono County is the town of Bodie a gold rush era ghost town that is now designated as a California state historic park. Bodie is a popular tourist attraction where visitors come to see what a small town was like during the California Gold rush in the 1800's.
