Contra Costa County is one of nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area. Primarily a suburban area, the county is home to just over one million residents. The name is Spanish for "opposite coast" a fitting name for a county on the east side of SF Bay. Contra Costa's largest city is Concord, and the county seat is currently the city of Martinez. The county contains four National Protected Areas. These areas are the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge, Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, John Muir National Historic Site, and Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historic Park. The county also is home to Mount Diablo State Park, named after the 3,849 foot tall peak, an excellent place to explore on bike or foot.
