California
Safe and Dangerous Cities FBI Crime Statistics
Violent crimes in all four regions of the
United States were reported for 2008 according to FBI crime statistics. California
cities rank both with high and low marks. Regions no more the 50
to 75 miles apart can rank at the top and bottom for safety,
amazingly. While crimes can and do happen most any place,
these rankings combined the size of the cities and the number of
reported crimes, ranking them in categories with cities of
comparable size and then overall. California enjoys six out of
25 safest cities overall and none of the 25 most dangerous.
That's fairly impressive. Delving further, two cities, San Jose
and San Diego rank among the safest for populations over 500,000
(each tops 1 million), with no California cities ranked as most
dangerous in populations of 500,000 or more. Even in the
100,000 to 499,999 category there are not California cities in
the dangerous category. All in all, California receives a fairly
high score for traveling and enjoying.
Digesting California: in 2008 Mission Viejo was the safest
city, but slipped to 2nd place. Irvine no longer ranks in
the top 10 safest, an honor it earned around 2006 or 2007.
For cities of 500,000 or more people, here's the score: Safest city was Honolulu, HI, followed by 2. New
York, NY. El Paso, TX was 3rd, San Jose 4th, Austin
5th, San Diego sixth, Seattle 7th, and Los Angeles 8th
safest. California ranks three out of the top 8, which isn't
too bad. Bad cities (unsafe) brought Detroit in first place,
followed by Baltimore, Memphis, Washington, D.C.,
Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Dallas.

All "Metro Area" listings are for
Metropolitan Statistical Areas (M.S.A.s) except for those ending with
"M.D." Listings with "M.D." are Metropolitan Divisions which are smaller
parts of ten large M.S.A.s. These ten M.S.A.s, further divided into M.D.s,
are indicated by the word "(greater)" following the name. An example is
Dallas (greater) which includes the two M.D.s of Dallas-Plano and Fort
Worth-Arlington. |
