| Crescent City is one of the
northernmost cities in the state of California. It is located on the
Northern California coast about 20 miles south of the Oregon border
along Highway 101. Smith River and Klamath Rivers, Redwood National &
State Parks and the Smith River Recreation Area are some of the
fantastic natural resources and recreational areas for visitors to
enjoy. The lush landscape is beautiful look at photograph and is made
lovely by the 75 inches of average rainfall.
Life in the region is for a
special breed who do not mind the rain. So different is the lifestyle at
this Northern California beach compared to Southern California beaches,
that it's hard to believe they share even the same state. But California
is known as the land of extremes and diverse landscapes so Crescent City
provides one of those great earmarks for grandeur in growing some of the
largest, oldest trees in the world, thanks to the unique climate.
Two of the great landmarks for
tourists to see in the region are the Battery Point Lighthouse and the
beaches. The Battery Point Lighthouse is one of the first lighthouses on
the California coast. In 1855 Congress appropriated $15,000 for the
construction of the light station, which was completed in 1856 by the
U.S. Lighthouse Service. It was automated in 1953.
Crescent City is 1.6 square miles in size with
a population of 7,542 and a surrounding urban service area of
approximately 15,000. County-wide the population is approximately 26,000
encompassing 1003 square miles.
Summer coastal temperatures average 60 to 70 degrees, with inland
temperatures much warmer.
