Corona del Mar--Corona del Mar State Beach is located at
the bottom of a cliff, where ocean view homes sit next to lovely parks. The
beach was remodeled recently and offers modern restrooms, showers, jogging
paths, fire rings, volleyball nets, hills to climb, shaded picnic areas with
barbecue grills and a nice, sandy beach to enjoy.
Facing the Newport Beach
jetty, where boats leave Newport Harbor and head for the sea (or for
Catalina Island,) this beach was once popular with surfers. While the
jetty now obstructs those powerful waves, across the channel is the famous
Wedge, where skilled surfers tackle strong currents and shorebreak to ride
test their skills. As we stood at the Corona del Mar State Beach (part of
Newport Beach), and gazed to the other side, one local told his friends that
about once a year some poor person breaks their neck at the jetty. It can be
as simple as being dumped into the sand from a surfboard with such impact
that your bones break.
Back in Corona del Mar
State Beach, who would know of such things? The water's nice and calm and
there's lots going on at this beach where heated games of volleyball occur.
The state beach offers plenty of parking charged at a fee, or you may find
parking on the cliffs atop the hill on Ocean Boulevard. A set of stairs
offers easy access for those who find parking and prefer to walk. But if you
carry lots of stuff, pay the money and park your car in the lot.
