Backgrounder: After you
exit Pacific Coast Highway and head toward the beaches of Corona del Mar,
there are so many beautiful homes, hilltops, coves, rocky points and roads
to explore. Each attractions is incredibly beautiful and special in this
community of Newport Beach that seems a world unto itself. While some
consider Carmel on the Central California Coast the romantic place, when you
spend time exploring Corona del Mar, it may be a toss-up as to which you'll
choose for stunning views.
One great walk starts
after passing Begonia Park. Exit Pacific Coast Highway at Carnation, then
drive west to the bottom of the park and turn right on Bayside, veering
right again to Fernleaf. Drive several blocks on Fernleaf and park on the
street along Fernleaf and Ocean Blvd. If tempted to continue an additional
block on Fernleaf, you'll discover a sign that says, "All Cars Must Park on
Top of Bluff".
The bottom of the bluff
is filled with beautiful houses that have limited parking, red curbs
and the gem you seek, the little China Cove Beach. Accessible via a
well-built, wide set of steps with handrails, head down the hill and be
amazed at the views of the Newport Beach bay. Several vistas include
stunning jetty views, The Wedge and Catalina Island.
