Redondo Beach Chart House, one of many
California Chart House
Restaurants, offers spectacular views and exceptional dining.
There are eight or nine Chart Houses in California (used to be more) and
we've eaten at six of them...all with the views, as promised. While they
used to served a delicious, hot squaw bread that is no more, the hot
rolls and crackers are pretty good.
Throughout the years they've kept a
salad bar that allows guests who opt for putting together their own a
great selection of items that include caviar, capers, olives, marinated
mushrooms, cheese and at least 30 salads, nuts, vegetables, pasta and
tomatoes, plus dressings and all the toppings.
On a recent visit my favorite tea
(Paradise) was served, and I ordered a Herb Crusted Salmon with garlic
mash potatoes and pommeroy mustard sauce (right). On left you can see
the house chicken dish with a side of baked potato. I tried the salmon
based on a sweet lady's recommendation.
It was getting around 3 p.m. on
Christmas Day and we'd driven through parts of Orange County, Long
Beach, San Pedro and now were in Redondo Beach, ready to turn back
again. Without a bite to eat, my only hope was to get back to a grocery
store that was open and maybe buy some food to cook. Harbor House
Cafe and ShoreHouse Cafe were all we'd seen, till my eyes lit up at the
sight of cars driving into the parking lot for Chart House restaurant
overlooking the beach in Redondo Beach. I didn't want to get my hopes
dashed, so I held back getting excited. But as I pulled into the parking
garage and saw people exiting the door with styro food containers in
hand, my mouth started to water at the thought of a great salad and
delicious hot meal.
OK, so the wait was over an hour.
Everyone else had made reservations and they were already 20 minutes
behind on seating them first. But with persistence and bit of bugging
the receptionists, we received an oceanfront table, one of the best in
the house!
What can you eat at Chart House?
Offering a full bar and skillful bartenders, the cocktails are great. A
full selection of wines seem to be popular, too.
For starters, enjoy the Raw Bar or
Appetizers. Raw Bar includes delights from the sea such as Crab, Avocado
and Mango Stack which is Jumbo lump crabmeat tossed in remoulade over
layers of fresh avocado and mango; Seared Peppered Ahi Tuna with tangy
mustard, ginger & wasabi; Shrimp Cocktail in a gazpacho cocktail
sauce.
Appetizers include Calamari;
Crab Stuffed Mushrooms in a white wine sauce; Coconut Crunchy Shrimp
with sweet plum sauce; Lobster Spring Rolls or Steamed Mussels in herbs,
garlic and white wine sauce.
Fish &
seafood is one of the house specialties and they know how to cook it to
the tee, light, tender and moist. Salmon comes in several preparations,
a crab crusted, chive oil drizzle, with coconut ginger rice or Herb
Crusted Salmon
with garlic mashed potatoes and pommery mustard sauce. Macadamia Crusted
Mahi Mahi with peanut sauce; Spiced Yellowfin Ahi; Snapper Hemingway
with jumbo lump crab and shallot butter; and Chilean Sea Bass are some
of the seasonal options.
Shell fish options are Coconut
Crunchy Shrimp with tangy mustard sauce & sweet plum sauce; Shrimp
Fresca with
parmesan crusted jumbo shrimp with angel hair pomodoro, topped with
jumbo lump crab; Shrimp Trio Platter,
12 large shrimp prepared scampi, coconut and grilled, served with
seasonal vegetables and rice pilaf; Jumbo lump crab cake; Pan Seared Sea
Scallops and Baked Stuffed Shrimp. Crab & Lobster comes in Jumbo Lump
Crab Cakes; Alaskan King Crab Legs; Australian Lobster Tail (6 oz); and
Dungeness Crab Clusters.
Prime Rib; Prime Rib and Shrimp; Filet Mignon; New York Strip;
Tenderloin Medallions; Filet (6 oz.) and Shrimp; Filet (6 oz.) and
Austrailian Lobster Tail are some traditional favorites. Side orders of
salads, baked potatoes, rice pilaf, asparagus, mushrooms or garlic
mashed potatoes are great accompaniments.
For dessert, Chart House is known
for its delicious Mud Pie. Cheese Cake, Creme Brulee or Hot Lava Cake
are on the menu currently, as well. Note: all menu items listed here
were offered when we dined but are subject to change, of course.
