Santa Barbara is one of California's top beach vacations and destinations for world travelers, who like the beauty of this stretch of Central Califoria Coast. Just a short drive from Los Angeles (over one hour, by car) you'll discover Santa Barbara has tourism down to a science. Combine outdoor sports with historic buildings and walks, a college influence providing contemporary clothing, music, foods and lifestyles, and a coastline with a beach set at the base of a mountain and valley, and you'll understand why nearly everyone who passes through Santa Barbara wants to stay there. Museums and botanical gardens abound, yet there are also beach sports such as volleyball, skating, surrey rides, walking, jogging, and events throughout the year. You can hop aboard a yacht to see the whales off-coast, take a boat daily to the Channel Islands to explore, visit Cachuma Lake nearby for great bird watching and camping, or just stay in town for shopping. State Street is the mecca of shop-a-holism with dozens of eclectic stores featuring boutique style clothing, jewelry and gifts. In addition, the restaurants include a wide variety of ethnic foods ranging from the standard American faire to Indian, Mexican, Greek, Italian and more.
