San Simeon is best known for its shining star on the hill, the Hearst Castle. This is a castle of the grandest style built by the famous William Randolph Hearst. He is deceased, but his castle on the Central California Coast was willed to be operated by the California State Parks as one of its top tourist attractions. For such a big attraction, you'd think the countryside surrounding it in San Simeon would be fully developed with modern Walmart stores and the like. But it isn't. This seaside scene includes a village with shopping and hotels, beaches for sunbathing and kayaking, beaches to watch sea lions and seals, and a laid back atmosphere. The biggest shopping mecca and closest thing to a big city is down the road south in San Luis Obispo. In San Simeon, guests can book hotels and stay overnight for touring the castle. A city nearby, Cambria, does offer boutique shopping, gourmet dining and activities and events throughout the year.
