Lompoc was once the hopeful to get the space shuttle. While that plan never quite materialized, you'll sometimes see launches into space of rockets from Vandenberg Air Base that skirts the city along the California coast. Lompoc features a great shopping district with a mix of boutiques and restaurants. There's a neat museum in town, lots of hotels and restaurants, modern shops, and one of our favorite missions of Calfiornia's 21-mission chain. Once known for its flower fields, that industry mostly went to South America because the costs there were cheaper. As Lompoc lost its beautiful tourist attraction, the city began painting flowers and murals on buildings. One of its biggest annual events, the Lompoc Flower Festival, pays tribute to the industry that the older generations know and remember.
