Chain hotels: Chain hotels must qualify and meet specific standards to earn the brand that they represent in their name. From the top-of-the-line Four Seasons brand which often touts five diamond quality and prices, to the mid-range to low-end budget chains, travelers like consistency and will often choose a chain hotel in California, mainly because there are so many to choose from. If you are a chain hotel shopper, don't overlook the privately owned hotels as additional options. We've lucked into some gems in California, where a home has been transformed into a b&b style property. You'll find some of these hotels in the more remote Sonoma and Mendocino coast, at mountain resorts such as Big Bear Lake, and in Napa and Sonoma wine country. Reasons for hotels not carrying a brand name include expense and amenities required to qualify. Some also are dropped from the chain brand because their quality drops, or change brand because they re-market themselves to even a higher-end audience. The B&B's that range from chalets to historic properties often do not fit into the thinking of a chain hotel, thus they become known through word-of-mouth and good press.
