The best way to describe this location is blue. The ocean really steals the show in San Simeon, a small town known for Hearst Castle, Piedras Blancas Seal Rookery and the Gateway to Big Sur. While the view above looks somewhat isolated, there are shops, restaurants and a visitor center with neat people to provide literature and information for your journey. A trip north or south through the state would make this an ideal location to stay overnight. You are about 4 hours driving time from Los Angeles and 3 to 4 hours from San Francisco via Highway 1 Big Sur.

Passing through there several times, I am sure they must have warm days but I noticed a cool breeze on all my visits and advise you to take a jacket. This hotel could not be better located. There are others along Highway 1 without this view and beach location. The center photo above shows a great firepit with chairs around it, on a cement pad. One can only imagine how spectacular it must be to watch the sunset, wrapped in a towel or blanket, sitting around the fire. Many beaches along the state offer similar experiences but not all offer the serenity of this quiet location.
