Carpinteria
--Carpinteria State Beach is one of the
scenic Central Coast beaches that shares the charm Santa Barbara is known
for. This Riviera style beach was chosen by the self-proclaimed beach
expert, Dr. Beach, as one of the best beaches in the United States. The Florida International University's
Stephen Leatherman uses 50 criteria in three categories to pick his places.
Physical factors such as sand softness, wave size and current strength,
biological factors such as water color and quality and presence of pests,
and human use factors such as lifeguard protection, visual obstructions
and amenities all factor into his equation. Carpinteria City Beach was the only California
beach he chose.
Carpinteria
State Beach is a mile-long beach with activities such as swimming, surf
fishing and camping. A nearby Amtrak train stop makes and downtown shops
make this a place you can park the car or get off the train and walk to
nearly everything nearby.. Seals and sea lions and an occasional gray
whale may be spotted during the winter months where it actually can get a
bit chilly, requiring coats. 12 miles south of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria
offers only a few hotels so we like to visit this beach and city, but stay
nearby in Santa Barbara, the crown jewell of the coast.
Carpinteria is not to be ignored,
however. The State Beach is wonderful, clean and offers unfettered views of
the ocean sunsets. The park includes a visitors center, restroom facilities,
campsites, RV hookups and more. Even if a reservation is made in this
area, it does not guarantee a beach front site. The loop called 'Beach
Front' is for RV and Trailers ONLY. The ONLY Tent Camping is at
the Anacapa/Santa Cruz loop For RV sites on beachfront, reserve in
Santa Rosa or San Miguel Beach
Directions The park is on Highway
224, off U.S. 101, twelve miles south of Santa Barbara. Carpinteria
