Built in
1771, the second of the missions was Father Serra's headquarters. It
is officially called Basilica of Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmel
and is one of two basilicas on the West Coast. It is honored because of
historic importance and the work of Father Serra.
The Carmel
Mission is located on Rio Road off Highway 1. The car (below) travels from
downtown Carmel to the mission. Fountains, statues, flowers and
Father Junipero Serra's burial place are here.
Tour groups make regular stops at the mission and grounds know for its
scenic beauty colorful photo opportunities.
