Capitola, California is a shopper's
delight. The small, beach-side downtown shops and stores are all within a
few square blocks with most no more than a peak around the corner from the
Pacific Ocean with its sand beach views. This Santa Cruz County treasure
offers clean streets, friendly folks and a sunny days most of the year.
While parking can be a bit challenging, once you find a spot you are only a
few blocks from your favorite restaurants, stores, shops, boutiques and even
wine tasting bars.
Colorful banners on the charming,
antique-styled light fixtures announce that Capitola has it all...dining,
shopping and so much more. On a recent trip we explored the village and
stopped at several art galleries, one containing a large selection of
decorator glass pieces, a thrift shop with some well-kept items that were
not needed by their owners anymore, a beach-themed womenn's clothing store
with fantastic sweaters and jackets and to top the experience off, a lovely
meal outdoors on the bay overlooking the Venetian-style buildings near
Capitola Wharf.
For a day of shopping, two of us spent
$35 on lunch and $40 on gifts. Departing with treasures such as a silver
charm for a bracelet, gift cards and a nice bottle of wine, we headed for a
well-deserved swim at the hotel before taking in a movie. If you're
visiting Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, Watsonville and other nearby
destinations, be sure to take a drive over to Capitola for a lovely stroll
combined with some fun shops where the folks who run them are incredibly
pleasant.
