Cannery Row Monterey, California Photos

Monterey Photos

Cannery Row, Monterey - Pacific Grove, CAAOne of the BeachCalifornia rituals when visiting Monterey is to drive under the archway spanning the Cannery Row. In the daytime you can view people walking between the Monterey Plaza Hotel and the Cannery Row shops. At night there's a scent of the ocean, some bright lights and an intimate feel that allows you to imagine how this former sardine cannery complex must have when operating decades ago.

Shopping - There's so much to do around the Monterey Bay and never enough time so we have a mental list that changes a bit but goes like this: The second item on our list is to stop and shop at the Cannery Row Outlets, where the Reebok Factory Store sells the shoes we need for hiking through California's coastal trails, American Tin Cannery, 125 Ocean View Blvd #118, Pacific Grove, CA. Call: (831) 644-0990.

Dining - The third choice is to dine at Bubba Gump, 729 Cannery Row, Pacific Grove, CA. Call: (831) 373-1884. We've tried other Bubba Gump locations but none quite match the views of colorful kayaks paddling the bay nearly within reach of where you dine. The ribs are great at this restaurant and we usually get them with a salad.

Monterey Bay Aquarium - The fourth item of enjoyment is to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a spectacular facility with rotating exhibits and architecture that integrates the Hovden Cannery it was built in with the excellent aquarium spaces. We've traveled to many conferences, event functions and even wonderful weddings held after hours in the Monterey Bay Aquarium that if we miss a year of visiting there, we begin to feel separation anxiety.

Starbucks Coffee - The fifth is to buy an iced venti-size latte at Starbucks, 711 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA. Call: (831) 656-9531—it's located in the warehouse of the Monterey Canning Company at Cannery Row.

Photos & Logo Clothes -   Next, wander to look at the bust of John Steinbeck in the plaza. A small plaza contains beautiful flower beds and views of the Monterey Bay. You have to take a photo here. The photos come out great. The sixth thing to do is to go into the Pebble Beach Company logo and golf clothing shop at Plaza Two center adjacent to the ocean, 660 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA. Call: (831) 373-1500.

Kayaks - There are so many things to do in Cannery Row. Each guest who visits has their own personal preference for spending an hour or more. There are kayaks for rent to paddle around the bay. Seals are enjoyable to watch and this location was chosen as the most likely place to see a seal.

17-Mile Drive - One of the most beautiful drives in the U.S. is Pebble Beach's 17 Mile Drive. With many roadstops and markers to guide you, you'll see the trademark Lone Cypress tree that sits out on a cliff jutting into the ocean, you'll see several famous golf courses, Bird Rock and much, much more. Be sure to catch a sunset if you can. There's nothing like it on Earth.

For those who just want to play tourist, you can dine at a dozen or more restaurants, shops at the gifts stores and boutiques that mostly feature touristy items or go to the outlet mall with lots of choice stores, have a cocktail with a view of the bay at one of the bars overlooking the water, take photos and even spend the night by reserving a hotel room right on the bay.

Cannery Row Hotels

We've often stayed at the Monterey Bay Inn. The rooms at this hotel feature the sounds of the seals barking in the bay at night. Some people are irritated by the sound but for true beach people, it's a pure delight.

You're guaranteed to see seals here, too. Just follow your ears to the Monterey Bay where seals can be heard barking away. Seal Beach in Southern California is named for the seal and would love to see them return. But don't hold your breath. You are much more likely to see them in Monterey, especially near the wharf. There were so many seals at one time, that when the founder of California Missions arrived in Monterey Bay in the 1700's, Father Junipero Serra was overwhelmed to see a black, solid mass of seals on the beach.
