Traveling with foreign journalists in
California is always a delight. It provides the opportunity to see things
with new eyes. For instance, an hour-long bus stop in Napa Valley's
Calistoga appeared, at first glance, to be just a bump in the road. But
following behind several Japanese reporters and photographers, this
like-minded traveler snapped to attention. A dog on a leash tied to the post at a general store was
simply fascinating to one photographer. A chef walking down an alley, a
river bed from a bridge, a pink house and several cars passing along on the
street provide subject matter for international newspapers. With our tour
bus of 50+ travelers invading Calistoga, this was an experience in which the
reporters were the news.
Calistoga is one of those
great towns where folks make you feel right at home. Not big or
confusing, there's an abundance of pleasure for a city with less than 5,000
population! Over 30 wineries that include the popular Sterling Vineyards,
close to 20 spas and a variety of shops attract people from around the
world who want to taste California wines and to see the beautiful countryside
preserved by ordinances that allow only a specified amount of growth. Spa
aficionados love Calistoga and claim some of the spa treatments available
here, can't be beat, anywhere. If you've heard of the Calistoga Hot Springs,
you are on the right path to enjoyment and relaxation.
In a region where wine is king, youu'd
expect a wine festival of some sort but Calistoga likes to do things its own
way with a springtime jazz festival Mustard, Mud & Music (celebrating the
blooming of the mustard among the bare vines) and the Downtown Blues in the
Fall. Other annual events include a farmer's market, Cinco de Mayo Parade
and festival, an old fashioned Fourth of July Parade and County Fair and in
December in recognition of its agricultural heritage a Lighted Tractor and
Truck Parade. Nearby, The Bale Grist Mill State Park celebrates Old Mill
Days in October and Pioneer Christmas in December with costumed volunteers,
period music and events.
Calistoga offers a lush landscape of hills, streams and fields filled with
tall grasses, flowers and trees. There's a beautiful Bale Grist Mill State
historic park with an operating 30 foot high water wheel worth checking out.
Get a bird's eye view on a hot air balloon ride are available for a fee in
Calistoga. Other fun things to see and do include Old Faithful Geyser, the
Petrified Forest and Sharpsteen Museum, chosen as best local museum by the
Bay Area Metro newspapers.
