There are two zoos in Orange
County, the Orange County Zoo operated by the County of Orange Parks
Department, and the Santa Ana Zoo Prentice Park, a nonprofit zoo
organization open to the public.. Both have fun events throughout
the year, with one of our favorites being
Boo at the Zoo.
In addition to the train rides in Irvine Park, Orange County Zoo is
located in the beautiful, wooded, 477 acre wilderness park. Focused on
animals and plants of the Southwest, you'll see mountain lions, a bald
eagle, island foxes, ocelot, black bears, porcupine, coyotes, turkey
vultures, coati, red-tailed hawk and great horned owls. While
these exhibits are look and enjoy only, the zoo has a barnyard with
goats, chevoit sheep, jacob sheep, pot-bellied pigs, doves and
pheasants. You can't go wrong visiting the zoo and being educated and
entertained by the graceful animals who call it home.
While parking to the Irvine Region
Park will be your greatest expense, zoo admission is a couple bucks.
On the day we attended the zoo,
children and adults filled the paths, looking with interest at the
animals as they were fed. Some have their sleepy times in which they
hang out in shaded spots so you hardly can see them. Patience and timing
will allow you to see more.
