Pack up the kids and their friends and head for Mammoth
Mountains for Christmas in the snow. The California
destination most likely to provide a white Christmas, Mammoth Lakes
(and mountains), offers soft powder snow conditions, plenty of
beginner slopes, sledding, kids restaurant favorites and traditional
holiday church services around the village.
This could be the lucky year
for a kids Christmas vacation in
Mammoth Lakes. You're dreaming of a
white Christmas where the tree tops glisten and trips down the ski
slopes send a rush of adrenalin through your veins. And believe it
or not, you're giving your deprived children an opportunity to
experience snow, the best gift they can receive! For the
girls, the fashion is exciting unto itself...pink ski pants,
matching ski jackets and accessorized scarves. The boys will look
cool, and tell their friends how they took on the challenging
slopes.
We've
searched throughout California and are finding it's getting more
difficult each year to guarantee snow on a December 25 holiday. Many
of California's four seasons destinations have not delivered on snow
in recent
years. Big Bear Lake, though we love it dearly, is hit and miss
(thank goodness for snow machines!) Even Yosemite Valley last winter
had rain mixed with snow. Blame it on global warming if you
like. But amidst all the mountain highs, you can pretty much count
on Mammoth Mountain resort to deliver white.
Inside your cabin or hotel
you'd never know it's cold outside. The kids are running around in
sleeveless tops, lounging around in comfy clothes and getting
attention from the folks. Parents snow-bound with their kids find
the experience fun. They play games, they gather around a fire,
watch TV and go through the ritual of bundling up to venture out in
the snow for a snowball fight. We've discussed
travel with disabled and autistic children, and because of all
the cabin-style lodgings at Mammoth Lakes, this is the perfect place
to take kids for a new experience.
That's the great news.
Now for reality. If you're three months out from a trip, you better
start looking at booking it today or tomorrow. It's not much of a
secret that Mammoth delivers on snow. If there's a day or week that
everyone wants to be in Mammoth, it's Christmas day and the
surrounding weeks before the holiday stretching past New Year's Day.
It's the time when kids have a break, parents get an extra day or
two, and you want to do something fun. You can start your kids
skiing as early as four, though some have begun even earlier. There
are other sports such as sledding, skating, cross country skiing and
just trudging through the snow.
When staying at many of the
cabins and lodges in Mammoth, you can read journals of guests who
stayed there before you. Their stories will warm your heart.
So many say that the experience is old-fashioned, fun, and all
seeing things through the eyes of a child.
