Costa Mesa,
Calif.-Pacific Symphony in Orange
County's trendy shopping destination, Costa Mesa, welcomes singing
sensation Maureen McGovern and virtuoso pianist Kevin Cole on June
14-16, at 8 p.m., at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, this concert
celebrates the music of the Gershwin brothers.
The music of George and lyrics
of Ira played in the new hall by the Pacific Symphony will include
selections of Gershwin tunes “Rhapsody in Blue,” “Overture to Girl
Crazy” and “Strike Up the Band.”
The first portion of the
evening will be an instrumental presentation and the second half of
the night will feature the singing talent and voice of Maureen
McGovern, whose career spans 35 years. Recording more than 25
albums, concerts, Broadway, theater, films and television, her
recording career began with a No. 1 chart-topping, Academy
Award-winning Gold Record, “The Morning After” from “The Poseidon
Adventure".
McGovern made her Broadway
debut as Mabel in “The Pirates of Penzance,” starred as Luisa in
“Nine” with Raul Julia, and as Polly Peachum in “The Three Penny
Opera” with Sting. More recently, she originated her Drama Desk
nominated role of Marmee in “Little Women, The Musical” in 2005-06.
Orange County Performing Arts
Center's new 2,000-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall
includes 500-seat multi-use Samueli Theater and an education center.
The new venues and resources, along with South Coast Repertory and,
eventually, an independent visual arts facility, are known as
Segerstrom Center for the Arts. United to an existing Orange County
Performing Arts Center (contains 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall and
500-seat Founders Hall,) by an outdoor plaza, is one of the nation's
largest and most versatile complexes idedicated to the arts.
