Hidden secret: The most popular
vacation time in Monterey / Carmel
continues through September and into
October. Some of the warmest
temperatures, least amount of
rainfall and most days of sunshine
without fog are enjoyed, making this
a highly desirable time to plan
events, weddings, meetings and
vacations.
Unlike other California beach
regions, the variation in water
temperatures along California
Central Coast shows a
differences of up to 10 degrees
(Pacific Grove to Ventura in the
month of August) so we've included
the full chart for your vacation
planning. One contributing
factor is the Alaskan ocean current
that flows south. Its influence
diminishes as it travels and by the
time it reaches Santa Barbara, its
effect is barely noticeable. Ocean
swimming is less popular on the
Central Coast than Southern
California, though the region offers
some great kayaking and surfing
opportunities.
Air temperatures and rain: In
January it gets down to 44 degrees
Fahrenheit in the Monterey area, and
rarely will you see a trace amount
of snow, showing no accumulation.
Unlike its northern counterpart,
however, Santa Barbara (250 miles
south and 4 hours by car) seldom
experiences a night below 40 degrees
in the winter, and if snow falls
once in a decade, it makes headline
news.
