SONORA -
Sonora Celtic Faire. Held in
early March usually, the long time event changed city and venue
locations, so we will need to keep our eyes open for the 2009
date and location TBD.
If wearing costumes and
acting like a kid again is your idea of fun, pack up the
children and let them see how crazy mom and dad really are at
the Celtic Faire, an annual event held usually in March in Gold
Country cities such as Sonora.
This isn't
just a musical weekend of Celtic song and dance. It is an entertainment weekend filled
with fun that never stops. In addition to traditional games such
as The Caber Toss in which mighty men throw a tree trunk,
Throwing the weights that requires a competitor must throw the
weight up and over a high bar, Putting the Stone (shot-put),
Hammer Throw swung several times over the head, then released
behind the thrower, innovative ways to have fun and entertain
will be introduced to those seeking sheer escape.
Gliding through time, the
event includes games and activities from various eras and parts
of the world. Not limited to jousting, you may see firing
of a civil war rifle, blacksmiths, barbarians, a queen and her
court, and knights in armor. Guilds bring to life
activities from the 1st century BCE through the late 1860s.
Bands included last year: Black 47, Cara, Beoga,
Tempest, The Black Irish Band, Wicked Tinkers and entertainment
with Knights Jousting on Horseback, Longbow Archery,
Armored Tournament, Modern Clans, Celtic Living History, Ethnic
Food & Drink, St. Patrick's Court , Mary Queen of Scot's Royal
Court , Irish Step Dancers, Highland Dancers. Time:
Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $18
