Catfish Derby annual
event brings out the families and anglers to catch big catfish.
The participants come
from Maryland, Nebraska, Montana, Oregon and Nevada to try to
win the big prize and catch the biggest catfish in this annual
fishing derby held each year in Clear Lake, California.
There were close to 600
people entering the event last year, and nearly 100 of them were
kids. The largest catfish caught weighed 28.23 pounds, with the
winner taking home a new boat! He caught the fish with
jumbo minnow near Rattlesnake Island. Many cast from their
boats, while others cast from shore. The annual event raises
money for civic organizations and events such as the 4th of July
Celebration. Located 100 miles (1 hour, 45 min.) north of
Sacramento, the event invites young and old to participate.
The 26th annual event is
the largest catfish tournament west of the Mississippi. The
tournament features separate divisions for adults and children.
Sponsored by the Clearlake Oaks Glenhaven Business Association,
entry fees are affordable for three days of fishing. Ranging
between $10 and $50, kids 15 and younger can enter for around
$10/each. Location: Derby Headquarters, Clearlake Oaks fire
station, 12655 E. Hwy 20, Clearlake Oaks. Call: (707) 998-1006 /
